Hobbes the Hibernator

After missing for 74 days, Hobbes finally came out of hiding, and thanks to his enrolled microchip with AKC Reunite, he was successfully reunited with his family.

Juliann, Hobbes’ owner, rescued him when he was just four weeks old. And since then, Hobbes’ has enjoyed being an indoor and outdoor cat until one night when Juliann forgot to bring Hobbes and her other cat in for the evening. The following morning, the other cat was at the door ready for breakfast and a good nap, but Hobbes was nowhere to be found. Julian immediately filed lost cat reports with AKC Reunite, her local shelter, and on the Nextdoor app. After two months, and still no Hobbes, Juliann distributed 388 missing cat flyers to every door within a mile radius of her home.

Seventy-four days after Hobbes was last seen, Juliann received an email from a neighbor who found a cat and saw Juliann’s flyer and thought it might be Hobbes. Juliann wrote back with extra details and informed the neighbor that Hobbes’ was  microchipped to rule out any doubt. This Good Samaritan then took him to a vet clinic straight away, and Juliann was contacted by AKC Reunite with the good news —the found cat was in fact Hobbes!

“Hobbes was very, very skinny and dehydrated, but otherwise in good shape” said Juliann. “I believe that in the stress of spending a night stuck outside, Hobbes got out of the backyard, panicked, and was stuck in survival mode until starvation, dehydration, or the cold weather forced him to come out of hiding.”

Thankfully, Hobbes personality was unaffected by the two and a half months he was missing. He was so happy to be home that he gladly welcomed the familiar commotion of three rambunctious kids.

“I have had five microchipped pets over the last two decades, but this is the first time that a microchip has [actually] brought one of them back home! We are all so overjoyed to have our boy back!”
