What should I do if I find a pet?

It is extremely important to get a loose pet to a protected area and off of the streets for its safety.  If you feel safe, slowly approach any loose animal. Otherwise call animal control for assistance.

Call any phone numbers on the pet’s identification tags, or take the pet to a veterinarian to be scanned for a microchip.

If you take any pet into your home for temporary shelter, keep the pet separate from your family members and pets. You cannot know how any pet will react in an unfamiliar place around new people or pets.

What happens when my pet is found?

When your pet’s identification number is called in to the recovery hotline, AKC Reunite will immediately call you. We also send text messages and emails to you if that information is on your record. If you are not home, we will try to reach your alternate contact. This is why it is very important that you keep AKC Reunite updated of any contact changes.

You can update your pet’s record any time by going online or sending updates to found@akcreunite.org. AKC Reunite’s 24-hour recovery hotline is listed on all AKC Reunite–issued collar tags and collars.

Why should I enroll my pet?

A microchip without an enrollment is like an ID card with no name or address. Without entering your contact information in our recovery service database, if your pet is lost and its microchip is scanned, we will have no way to reunite you with your lost pet.

How do I enroll my pet?

Go to www.akcreunite.org/enroll and you can either enroll online or download a paper application to send back to us.

I don’t know my pet’s ID number

You can call us at 800-252-7894 and we can see if we can find your pet’s microchip ID record by your phone number or email address. If we cannot, we suggest you have your vet scan the microchip to get the number, and then we’d be happy to look it up. FYI, Banfield pet hospitals have universal scanners and are happy to scan a pet a no charge.

I cannot submit my pet’s enrollment

Someone may have started an enrollment online but not completed it which is blocking you from enrolling. Please call 800-252-7894 or email us at updates@akcreunite.org so we can cancel the pending order and you may then enroll the pet.

A scanner is not reading my pet’s microchip.

AKC Reunite microchips can be read by universal scanners. If your pet’s microchip is not being read, please contact us at 800-252-7894 or microchip@akcreunite.org with:

  1. Your pet’s ID number
  2. Who (i.e. name of veterinary practice) was unable to detect the microchip
  3. The brand/type of microchip scanner used to detect and read the microchip

With this information, a team member will help you identify if there is a problem with the microchip or if it is another issue. Many times there is nothing wrong with the microchip and all is okay, but the scanner used is very old and outdated. In rare instances, the microchip may have shifted after implantation and is not located at its original implantation site.

Do you work with any Shelter Management software programs?

Yes.  We can upload microchip enrollments directly from Chameleon pet shelter management software.  Please contact a sales consultant at 800-252-7894 or microchip@akcreunite.org  for more information.

  • Your personal portal to quickly enroll pets’ microchips so they are immediately protected by our 24/7 recovery service.
  • A tracking system for microchips that you have purchased and enrolled.

Your PIN Code login information should be considered confidential and should not be shared with others.
